St Barths is an island that’s made for celebrating—from milestone birthdays to weddings, there is no doubt that guests are in for a good time when they first spot St Barths’ iconic red roofs from aboard a Tradewind Pilatus PC-12 that’s coming in for a landing.
But St Barths comes even more alive than usual during the festive season when the intoxicating combination of French wine, fresh seafood, perfect weather, and plentiful beach clubs make every day a celebration.
No holiday celebration in St Barths would be complete without sampling some of the island’s best cocktails, which tend to be more sophisticated than tropical-inspired. Read on to learn more about the can’t-miss cocktails on the island—and for an exclusive recipe for one of St Barths’ most beloved drinks, so you can recreate the magic even once your trip comes to an end.
Sex in the Bath at Bonito
Bonito is an elegant open-air restaurant that’s known for jaw-dropping water views and a famous cocktail called Sex in the Bath. It’s a must-have when you’re on the island—the intoxicating combination of vanilla-infused vodka, passionfruit shrub, and “secret foam” is served in a miniature bathtub, complete with a rubber ducky. Non-drinkers and children who don’t want to miss out on the novelty are in luck since Bonito also offers a virgin version of the drink complete with passionfruit juice, vanilla cordial, and pineapple secret foam.
KK Mule at Remy Bar, Eden Rock
This buzzy see-and-be-seen hotel works with renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten on its dining outlets, which is apparent through menus featuring items like his famous black truffle pizza. The drink to order here is the KK Mule, which is served at Eden Rock’s swanky Remy Bar and is named after luxury travel advisory firm KK Travels Worldwide. Their curated drink menu has a few mule options, and the KK Mule puts a Caribbean twist on this beloved cocktail by combining rum with the usual ginger beer and lime. The final ingredient, Angostura bitters, gives the classic drink a bit more complexity.
Caribbean Tiki at Nikki Beach
This scenery restaurant and beach club is the undisputed queen of the leisurely lunch on St Barths, and though the rosé might flow like water, it also has an excellent selection of cocktails.
Among the best is the Caribbean Tiki, which includes white rum, ginger and lemongrass cordial, pineapple, mango, passionfruit purees, and chocolate bitters. Groups looking to celebrate can opt for the selection of XXL cocktails such as a classic mojito with Angostura bitters. Don’t skip out on the nonalcoholic options here either—the ginger and lemongrass lemonade is particularly refreshing.
Beefbar Remedy at Beefbar, Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf
Few places on the island boast more dazzling sunset views than the bar at Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf. The newly opened Beefbar is the ideal spot to enjoy them. The tapas-style menu and extensive cocktail selection have quickly established Beefbar as one of St Barths’ new hotspots. While there, opt for the Beefbar Remedy, a signature cocktail that combines Calvados Dupont VS, lemon juice, ginger and honey syrup, and allspice bitters. The establishment suggests ordering it with the jasmine tea-smoked Kobe beef bao bun for the perfect pairing.
Even if you don’t have a trip booked to St Barths this year, you can still create one of the island’s beloved signature cocktails at home. We’ve acquired the classic recipe from the now-shuttered Fouquet’s bar so our guests can enjoy the straightforward but special cocktail any time.
Saffron Flavored Sunset
Ingredients:
- Saffron Flower
- Vodka
- Cane Sugar
-
Lime
Infuse 12 pistils from the saffron flower into a standard 750ml bottle of vodka. Keep infused for four days until the saffron turns white.
Once the vodka is infused and you’re ready to craft your cocktail, roll the lime on your work surface to soften the flesh, then cut off the ends and slice the lime lengthways. To reduce the bitterness of the juice, remove the white membrane in the center. Make three incisions in the lime so that the juice can be extracted on each side.
Place half of a lime in the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass with the flesh facing downwards. Cover the skin with two spoonfuls of cane sugar. Press down gently on the fruit with a pestle so that the grains of sugar rub against the zest to maximize the citrus aroma.
Add 2.5oz of the infused vodka, then fill the glass with ice cubes.
Pour all the contents into a shaker. Shake five times to break the ice. Pour straight into the cocktail glass and serve.
